ThreeTags – exporting and importing data

[tags]

General notes

Our customers can export or import their data through the "Tools" menu at the top right corner of the screen.

Current browsers do not allow client-side file processing: standard upload/download operations work directly with the server. As ThreeTags' server does not have access to unencrypted user data, this approach is not suitable in our case. We use a hidden Java applet to write exported data to and to read imported data from a hard drive.

So in order to be able to import and export your data, you need to have Java installed and enabled in your browser. Please visit Sun Java site to make sure that your Java works properly.

Please note that the export file is unencrypted, so if you store confidential data in your ThreeTags account, treat the export file carefully (don't send it as an email attachment, for example).

Several typical use cases

  • Password change: export all your data, empty the account, change your password, import your data back.
  • Share data between accounts: export some or all items from one account, import them into another.
  • Standard backup/restore routines.

Please also note that our service is still in beta: we do not know of any security or data loss issues, but we cannot guarantee anything at the moment.
